REFLECTIONS

June 2nd, 2024

I was appointed from eternity,

from the beginning, before the world began.

Proverbs 8:23

I Am Me

Blood rushed from my head and my hands trembled. I tried to bury my thought into the darkest crypt of my five-year old mind, but I was never able to find a lock secure enough to keep the fear of it from revisiting now and then. I am me. When I pass away, I will exist no more.

After years of fear and uncertainty, Scripture finally set me straight. From Acts:

But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” (7:55-56, 59)

Then from Revelation:

[John heard Jesus’] voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.

He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” (21:3-5)

Now I know the new world will have a Home for me, one more secure and filled with peace for it will be God’s home too. Though my new home may be in a form that I don’t comprehend, there will be no wants, the activities I enjoy will still be satisfied in some way, the giftedness given me will continue, and the people I love will be near. There will be no hurt nor pain, nor hunger nor thirst. There will be no war, no terror, no evil. Only love.

And I will still be me.

“You are the light of the world,”
