More than Meets the Eye

Heads down, eyes glued to the sand, we walked the beach in search of tiny treasures God placed on the earth. My eyes focused solely on the ground until Janice said, “Look up.” I raised my head to see a squadron of pelicans flying silently beneath a deep blue sky on their way to somewhere. Pelicans are not majestic in flight, but their silence was deafening. As someone once said: “Things are more than they seem.”

The world is indeed a complex place; but we each see it from our unique points of view—through the lenses of the places we live, experiences of life, influences of culture, and views of those around us. We cast judgments and make decisions on those beliefs. Yet we seldom see everything there. Things are more than meet the eye.

I wonder if God’s plan somehow connects all those things. Even though their flight seemed unimportant, pelicans in flight inspired these moments of reflection. Perhaps that was God’s purpose for them all along. But God likely had something more in mind. We seldom see the complete picture.

Even our lives are more than they seem. Silent powers fly above our heads, unseen treasures lie beneath our feet, hidden thoughts live within our minds, unleashed powers reside in our hands, and untapped love awaits in our hearts. Things are more than they seem.

And God designed it all.

“You are the light of the world,”
