REFLECTIONS

But I will sing of your strength, / in the morning I will sing of your love;

for you are my fortress, / my refuge in times of trouble.

Psalm 59:16

Fortress of Strength

The mountaintop location made the city easier to defend. And the wall surrounding it added to its defenses. Yet Jerusalem fell.

Our country found itself standing behind penetrable walls as the horrors of 911 unfolded. Neither have we found adequate protection from tornadoes’ twisting winds, floodwaters ravaging riverbanks, or scorching wildfires consuming riches of our land. We live in a fragile world no matter the strength of the fortresses we build. But as Martin Luther wrote in his enduring hymn:

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, a bulwark never failing;

Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:[1]

When adversity strikes it often reveals the weaknesses of human endeavors. Enemies find ways to conquer our strongest fortresses. Foolish decisions strip us of worldly treasures. Natural disasters even disrupt God’s beautiful creation. But nothing can strip us of God’s unfathomable love. He is our fortress of strength—a bulwark never failing. He is our refuge in times of trouble.

Let us sing praises for his protective strength and his ineffable love.

“You are the light of the world,”
