REFLECTIONS

"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."  At once they left their nets and followed him.

Matthew 4:19-20

On the Waterfront

When he could, Andrew took time from his fishing business to walk several miles to hear the preacher everyone was talking about. He had barely settled in with the crowd when John the Baptist startled them: “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

Andrew sprinted to find Simon, his brother, to tell him, “We have found the Messiah.”[1]

Days passed, then amid a hard day’s work on the Sea of Galilee, Andrew and Simon heard Jesus call from the waterfront, “Come, follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”

For much of his life Andrew had searched for the Messiah, never imagining the Messiah would come searching for him! He, a mere fisherman, never imagined there were more surprises in store.

He never imagined that one day amid a large crowd he would find a young boy with five loaves and a few fish, and he certainly never imagined it to be enough for Jesus to feed 5,000 men with it. He never imagined he would witness the Messiah’s death and among the first witnesses to his resurrection. And he didn’t imagine that one day he would serve as a vessel of light calling thousands to follow the Messiah. And it all began with an invitation at their workplace, on the waterfront.

Jesus meets us where we are, so isn’t the workplace a likely setting for Him to extend invitations to us. Whether we work as fishermen, or dishwashers, or presidents of large enterprises, Jesus comes to our workplaces with invitations to follow him. He doesn’t call us to change who we are and seldom to walk away from our trades. He simply invites us to let his light shine through our daily lives.

And when we do, there are more surprises in store than we can ever imagine.

“You are the light of the world,”
