REFLECTIONS

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.

Galatians 2:20

Just Show Up

Maybe we make it too hard. When Jesus charged us with The Great Commission, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…” and we accept that he intended each of us to be disciple makers, we become a bit overwhelmed. The logical next step is for us to go in search of activities and programs that will introduce Christ into our spheres of influence. Whether dutifully or energetically, we seek to reveal Christ and create a transformational experience for those around us. But maybe we don’t need to do anything so profound.

It occurs to me that Jesus made our role very simple. Wherever we go, all we need to do is enter and Jesus enters with us. He promised that when we remain in him, He is in us. So, with our mere presence, Christ is also there.

It’s true enough that being there may not make Christ’s presence recognizable, but that should not be troubling either. Even the men on the Emmaus Road didn’t recognize him until He broke bread with them; and neither did Mary Magdalene identify him until He spoke to her. And as for transformation, well that can happen after we are gone just as it did with the Apostles on Pentecost.

Carrying Christ wherever we go is easy. There surely are times and places when it is appropriate to draw attention to his presence through activities and programs, but there are also times when there is no need to show off. Just show up…

“And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory,” (2 Corinthians 3:18).
