Genesis 1:26
There it was. The headline, the story of the day, the story of life unfolding in this world. But as the story moves along, mysteries surface as God speaks the world into existence. The questions take center stage when God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness…”
Who is God addressing when He suggests making a man in “our” image and likeness? Are there others with God to speak mankind into existence? And what does their collective image and/or likeness look like?
When we read the story again, we find only God in the beginning; that is, until we discover “The spirit of God hovered over the waters…” And we later learn that Jesus promised: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Then God makes his image still clearer when on the first day He said, “Let there be light.” But God didn’t make the sun, moon, and the stars until the fourth day. And if we need more explanation, the Apostle John writes: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… In him was life, and the life was the light of men.” (John1:1, 4) So the Word (God’s Son) is life, and the life is the light of men. The Son is part of God too.
Now we have the image of God—the Father who plans it all; the Son who gives life and light to mankind; and the Holy Spirit who offers counsel and guidance. God is three-in-one. But for only one thing, that would be front page news.
God gave mankind freewill. We may choose to abide by the guidance from the Spirit, or to follow our own way. And we may choose to walk in the light or remain in the shadows of darkness.
We are made in the image of God. Our Father in heaven has plans for our lives; the Son is the light of the world; and the Spirit is our counselor and guide. So when choices present themselves, remember this:
When you choose to abide by the Spirit, and walk in the light of Jesus, God becomes front page news. Then, what Jesus said of you will be true…
“You are the light of the world,”
