REFLECTIONS

Surely I was sinful at birth,

sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

Psalms 51:5

Showers of Grace

The eyes of [the man and his wife] were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.  Then [they] heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. (Genesis 3:7-8)

Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s one command, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” (Genesis 2:16-17) They covered themselves to hide their nakedness from each other; and they hid from God to conceal their disobedience.

With one disobedient act they stripped themselves of perfection. They could never earn it back. And with their imperfection, they could no longer reside in the garden God specially prepared for them. The garden would no longer be perfect if Adam and Eve were allowed there.

Banishment from the garden didn’t end the consequences, however. Sinful parents can’t produce sinless children. To wash away our sins we need a savior. But our loving God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

Obedient to his Father and for our sake, [Jesus] humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross! (Philippians 2:8) With showers of grace He washed away our sins and we become whiter than snow. Perfect again. Worthy again. Alive again. Home again in the place God prepared before the world began for those who believe in him.

What a Savior! And what a loving God!

You are the light of the world,
