REFLECTIONS

December 22nd, 2019

When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

Luke 2:17-18

Christmas–Telling the Story

Crisp clear nights were not unusual for the time of year; but for shepherds tending their sheep, something seemed special about this one. The quiet quieter, the stillness more still. Then everything changed. Glistening stars began dancing in the sky, and shockingly an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:8-12)

The angel’s compelling message stirred them to go into Bethlehem in search of the newborn King. When they found the Christ Child, little could they believe the newborn King foretold so long ago would be born in such a lowly place. Still, they adored him, they worshiped him, and could not contain their urge to spread the word.

How exciting it must have been to tell the story!  Lowly shepherds became heralds of the Good News. Those who heard it were amazed by what they were told. Telling the story touched more lives than they would ever know. But if they had not told it we may never have known the amazing truth of God’s birth into the world.

So, as we prepare to celebrate this Christmas Day, let us worship and adore the Christ Child. And like the shepherds, let us become heralds too. By telling the story, those who hear it will be amazed at what we say to them.

And we have no idea how many lives will be touched by it.

“Glory to God in the highest,

And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

(Luke 2:14 NKJV)

Merry Christmas.

You are the light of the world,
