"For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

Revelation 7:17

Living Water

Unsuspecting that her life would suddenly change, a woman of questionable character made her daily walk to draw water from the well. She found Jesus there and he ask her for a drink. Puzzled that a Jew would make such a request of a Samaritan woman, she asked:

“You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” …”Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:9-10, 13-14)

Surely, we have heard this story, and likely we have uncovered some of the many lessons within it. We see how Jesus changed a sinful woman’s life. We may even identify some things we should change about our own. Though the many things we seek in our walks to the well each day may quench our thirst for a time, we recognize that we soon become thirsty again.

Solomon, blessed with wisdom, led a life of lavish prosperity, unequaled power, and unbounded pleasure; yet he called it all meaningless. I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” he wrote in Ecclesiastes.

And Jesus also cautioned, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matthew 6:19-20)

So, what is this living water; and where is it found? Jeremiah answered the first: “Those who turn away from [the Lord] you will be written in the dust because they have forsaken the Lord, the spring of living water. (Jeremiah 17:13, emphasis added) And Jesus answered the second:

“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” (John 7:37-38)

The Lord is the “spring of living water;” and whoever believes in him, the water I give him will become in him,” and streams of living water will flow from within him.”

With Christ in you, you become a stream of living water. And for those around you, one day their lives could be changed; and “God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

And they will thirst no more.

You are the light of the world,
