REFLECTIONS

Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?

Romans 9:21

Servants

Neither a smile nor a scowl crossed his face as he performed his duties. His job required great patience since everything he did would be quickly undone by mass of people scurrying about his workplace. And even though his job was to serve them, none of those busy people even gave him notice much less sought to know his name or offer a simple thank you.

Airports are busy places and it takes a lot of people to keep things moving there. Restrooms are places that are most taken for granted. They serve almost everyone that comes through, and they are expected to be functional, fully equipped and clean. Someone must do that job. It takes a special person to do that kind of work. It takes someone dedicated to the duty and willing to accept that a job well-done will go unnoticed. And it particularly takes a special person to do their job well knowing that all they have completed will be quickly undone. Such was the case with this unnamed servant. In an airport, there are others with menial jobs going unnoticed.

There are food service workers prepare customer orders in hot kitchens, and behind the counters, servers greet customers with a smile. Security staff maintains order and assures safety, and airport attendants transport the handicapped to their destinations. These are all ordinary people whose jobs go unappreciated if not unnoticed, but who serve the needs of travelers through airports and other busy places that our lives take us. One can only wonder what our lives would be like without these servants to take care of the basic needs we expect but seldom bother to acknowledge.

It is unlikely that any of these servants will find themselves being honored as a hero, or gaining attention for serving some noble cause, but without them what would life be like? God knew what He was doing when he gifted people in such different ways. And He knew what He was doing when He called so many to serve basic earthly needs and only a few for noble causes. All are servants to one another.

All are essential to our Father’s world.

You are the light of the world,
