Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6
“What’s next?” we asked last week.[1] Perhaps it’s the question the psalmist pondered when he recognized, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” (Psalm 119:105) The Lord will show us the way as he always has. Just look back.
What brought you to this place in your life today? The question may not be new, but from time to time an update is in order. Look back at the road just traveled. Recall the events that shaped the decisions made and the people who influenced your view of the world. Look at the milestones that marked your way to the place you are standing now. See how it fits together. Can you see God’s hand in it all?
It has been said that the Lord may be a lamp to my feet and a light to my path, but he doesn’t reveal the horizon. What’s next remains a mystery. But just look back. God’s hand has led you to this place, and your journey has been preparing you for the plans he has for you.
Trust in the Lord even when you don’t understand what he is doing. Then after a little while, just look back. You may hear God saying:
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.” (Isaiah 43:19)
And He has given you a role in it.
You are the light of the world,
