I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made

Psalm 139:14

Connecting the Pieces Together

A thousand pieces or so lay on the table before us. They were all different shapes or sizes or colors with none of them seeming more distinguished than any other. As a starting point, we first looked for the edges, and then the corners from among the edges. The remaining pieces were then grouped by color before finally connecting them, one by one, to join shape and color.

With time and searching and patience the puzzle began to come together—one piece at a time, one section at a time. No piece seemed to mean very much by itself, but as they were joined together a beautiful picture began to emerge; and connected together, a story started to unfold. In the end it took every piece to paint the picture and every piece had a part to play in the story. The picture was beautiful and the story compelling.

Over the weeks we worked on it, the jigsaw puzzle became an entertaining pastime, and this particular one was educational for us too. The picture it painted revealed some things we wanted to know about the world we live in; but to our surprise, the story it told taught us much more about life than we first imagined.

When we began, each piece standing alone seemed insignificant. But as the picture started to emerge it became clear to us that without any one of them it would be incomplete, and the story told would be lacking unless all the pieces were placed together in just the right way.

God created the world to work much like our jigsaw puzzle. No one of us means much without the others. Even the greatest leaders in history would not have been leaders unless they were connected with someone to lead. But when connected together, a picture is painted and a story is told. The picture is incomplete without every piece being in place, and the story is lacking unless all the pieces are placed together in just the right way. Oh! And consider this.

You are a piece in God’s great puzzle. You have been fearfully and wonderfully made to fit within it all. Yet, you are incomplete without a connection with the others around you. And no person around you is completed unless they are connected to you. It takes us all to complete the picture. And the picture is beautiful.

Each of us has a part to play in God’s great story. And the story is compelling.

You are the light of the world,

Richard +
