REFLECTIONS

So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
Acts 2:46-47NKJV
Living the Love of Jesus
You might describe it like the first Billy Graham Crusade, only this one was led by Peter. The text doesn’t tell us the size of the crowd, but it does tell us that on that day three thousand were saved. The event established the first church and we have been trying to bring people to church ever since. But most of us are without Peter’s command of the Scripture, the evangelistic magnetism of Billy Graham, or even the training of a local senior pastor. Most of us have heard the Gospel from them, but the truth is, most of us accepted Jesus as Savior because of someone of much less prominence. Most of us are saved because some ordinary person in our lives cared enough to live the love of Jesus when we needed it most. I think that is what happened in Peter’s day also.
The Scripture says that the people broke bread from house to house and “the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.” Peter wasn’t the only one doing it, and it wasn’t even done in the temple. Such is also the case in more recent times.
Bob and Donnie were old friends. The glory days they shared in high school were but a distant yet very fond memory. Graduation had taken them down different paths of life where each had enjoyed business successes and each had suffered painful failures. Along their paths, Donnie found Jesus. Bob found prison.
A few months ago they were reunited. Donnie extended an un-judging hand and Bob felt something was different than before. He couldn’t explain it, but he felt accepted and forgiven when he was with Donnie. He wanted more. He wanted what Donnie had.
They met at Bob’s house as his probation terms would allow, and in time Donnie introduced his old friend to other believers. These believers lived the love of Jesus when Bob needed it most. And one night Bob accepted Jesus as his Savior.
It didn’t happen in a church; it didn’t involve an ordained minister. It happened because ordinary people extended the love of Jesus through their ordinary lives.
That is what Jesus calls us to do.
“You are the light of the world.”
